What’s in the course?

1. Writing for the web (half day)

One of our flagship courses! The goal of this half-day session is to boost your skills and give you more confidence in writing for the web.

We look at what makes it different to writing for print, and the simple tricks you can use to make your content easy to read – so your readers are able to understand and retain the information.

There will be lots of best practice examples and activities along the way, for both individuals and groups.

Do let us know about any subject matter, or particular sections of your site you struggle with, and we’ll build activities around this in the session.

Kick-off discussion, with intros and whiteboard discussion about the different audience groups and the different types of content people are writing

How do people read on the web? The difference between reading content in print and online. What do users like? What do they find frustrating? Let’s not forget mobile too. With some quick tips which we’ll expand upon throughout the session

Who are you writing for? Think about your audience and their needs. How can you answer their questions with your content? How will you grab their attention?

What makes a good layout? Creating an intuitive, user-friendly and visually appealing experience through the way we present our content.

The importance of plain English. How we can make it easier for users to understand and retain the information. We’ll also cover the basics of SEO and why it’s important for Google to find you.

2. Writing for digital marketing (full day)

This session covers some of the subject matter from Writing for the web, plus:

The principles of writing for marketing: what approaches are effective across different formats?

Focus on blogging for business, from attention-grabbing headlines to clever content

Focus on email marketing, from subject lines to calls to action

Writing for social media and creating engaging posts that excite your audience

And of course, lots of brilliant examples to illustrate our key points, and group activities to help you put theory into practice.

Sookio’s training sessions were really well tailored for our staff. The use of relevant examples and actionable ideas is helping us improve our content already.
